Leveling the legs

We have started renovating the kitchen and it is now taking shape. Dave built the cupboard carcasses out in the garage and brought them in and we adjusted them in place. That is me on the floor adjusting the legs so the cupboards will be level.

Dave is very clever and handy he has cut the cost on this kitchen renovation by thousands of dollars. The doors, side panel, skirting and top mouldings will be made out of timber which Dave will make himself .The bench top we will order from a kitchen place and I think it will be laminated or then again it could be granite, only because I recently found a company that has a lots of off cuts they can't get rid of and Dave could use them some how in the kitchen and also in other furniture he makes for the shop. We have also made wide drawers that will be just below the bench top to store our pot & pans and also crockery, it will make things easier for Jess or has a bad back and for Dave who has arthritis. It will be a fantastic kitchen with a huge walk in pantry where I can stock up on food and store my jams and pickles etc. I just love the big window that opens outwards so that I can see into the paddocks and the dam. You know life is simple and I feel blessed!

The lambs are so cute! I love the way they jump with glee and kick their legs in the air. They are testing their mobility and agility as they stand on stumps and race the other lambs around the paddock until mama calls and then its a race back to her for a drink and a cuddle.

Where does the time go

About a month ago we had snow you can hardly see it but it did snow, not much but it was definitely snow. Apart from the snow it has been really cold here and one of the problems I haven't been at my blog is that we have had sick ewes and sick lambs. We had a few ewes just drop and didn't have the energy to get up and feed they were just exhausted from lambing and trying to keep warm. We penned the sheep and gave them extra feed and cracked corn to try to give them extra substance. The really sick ewes I gave a big dose of glucose and over a few days we saw an improvement. We did sadly lose some lambs because of the cold and their frailty. I still have one lamb that has pneumonia and have given it a few injections of penicillin, it is still pretty sick but is up and walking around and feeding.

The Wombat

The wombat is a marsupial that digs burrows. It is about 1 metre long from nose to tail, the tail being only a couple of centimetres long. An adult weighs about 25-35 kilograms. Wombats are the largest burrowing mammals. A wombat is covered with coarse grey or brown fur, with a large head, a large nose and small ears. It is solidly built, with large claws for digging. Its body has a rounded appearance. Its back is hard and bony. This bony back is a useful defence against intruders in the burrow, as the wombat uses its back to crush them against the burrow wall.
The wombat is nocturnal, which means it is active at night, eating grasses, roots and shrubs. It stays in a burrow in daytime, though sometimes can be seen basking in the sun at the burrow entrance. It lives alone, except for a female with young.

Some people just don't care!

I live out in the country and some of my roads are dirt and you usually see wildlife about, anyway on my way to work this morning I passed a wombat on one of these dirt roads. Someone must have hit last night and just left it there. I drove up beside it and the poor thing was still alive shivering from shock. I don't know how badly injured it was but I did notice blood on the side of its head, apart from its faint breathing I say he was in the last stages of death. I felt helpless and knew I just couldn't drive off so I turned around and headed home, moments like these I felt I should have obtained a gun licence and bought a gun, but the thought of having a gun around would make me uneasy. I knew a neighbour that would willingly help this poor fellow out, so I rang the neighbour and picked him up and we drove back to the wombat and put him out of suffering.

It makes me angry sometimes when people don't care or want go out of there way to do the right thing. I know sometimes accidents happen when animals run out on the road and I know and have killed an animal instead of running off the road trying to avoid them. But to leave an injured or dying animal on the road is not right to my thinking.

Update!.. SNOW!!! ...Need photos!....

As usual a lot has happen in a few days. We had SNOW for the first time on our property, that we have seen ( I have never seen snow). It was really beautifully, falling like soft little feathers from heaven. I do have some photos of Rex and Lucky covered with snow flakes on there noses and bodies and a photos of the little ones, Sarabie, Abbey and Jatzie looking up into the sky wandering what was that stuff falling and if it was eatable. I was a bit late for work but it was very enjoyable just standing outside looking at the snow softly falling to the ground.

We picked up our new Ute, a Mazda BT50 Freestyle, it is lovely to drive and the fuel economy is much better than our old Ute. We should be saving about $200 a month in fuel. Dave hasn't driven it yet, his plaster comes off his arm next week, then he will have to start physio. We are way behind in making customer orders because of his accident and I'm trying not to take on any new orders, which has been a little frustrating.

Adam and Megan have been making plans for there wedding in October, they only want something small and personal, just immediate family and close friends. The weather should be good and the gardens should be at there best. I can't wait, Adam and Megan make a loving couple and it will be nice to see them joined together in marriage.

I bought a white Mulberry tree and haven't planted it yet, not enough daylight time at the moment. I need to buy two apple trees as well as more newspaper for my No-Dig Garden, I'm hoping to get it organized before next month. The weeds are starting to take over my garden at the moment because it has been unattended since Dave had the car accident. I'm also really longing to get started on my wool spinning, I do have a couple fleeces and there is a spinning club in town and I am so tempted to go there for a few hours but then other things might suffer, I'll have to wait for another time (maybe when I'm old and in a nursing home)

On Eagles Wings

The Wedge-Tailed Eagle

It is the largest raptor in Australia and is protected. A lanky bird, wing span 2.74m, hunts by high soaring flight, circling up on thermal air currants for hundreds of meters and sailing out over the country side. Sighting prey, it sweeps down onto it in a long, slanting swoop. Generally it preys on rabbit, wallabies, small kangaroo. Nearly all prey is taken on open ground and the eagle usually feeds where they capture their feed

INTERESTING...........

Jess and I were driving to work/school this morning, singing and chatting when all of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I see this Wedge-tailed Eagle on the side of the road starting to take off and because they are a huge bird it takes them time to get the momentum up to get up in the air. Anyway it was all too late because he just smashed into the front side of the car. Jess screamed her head off (she doesn't like birds) all I could see was this eagle looking at me through the windscreen and his wings covering the window. I braked hard and I dont think he was hurt too bad, I looked up in the rear vision mirror and I seen him reaching and landing in one of the tall trees. Thank goodness for the both of us the car was not damaged and the bird was ok.

I've seen the eagles quiet a few times now on the side of the road picking at a dead kangaroo, fox or rabbit but they usually see or hear me coming and usually get going pretty quickly. The farmers see them as pest because they take young lambs or prey on any sick or ailing sheep.

Abbey! Abbey!

This morning I was rushing around doing my morning chores before work, I checked and fed the chickens gave them some stale bread treats from the local bakery, fed the horse and the lambs in the house paddock, usually when I do this I let my little dogs out and they run and play. Well this morning they pulled and tugged at the chicken pen door and opened it after I went back into the house and when I came back out Abbey had killed one of the baby chickens, wretched dog. The rooster was out also roaming around but thank goodness the other little chick was been protected by the other three hens.

Abbey is a lovely Maltese cross jack Russell dog but she has the instinct to run and chase things.

She loves to have her belly rubbed, especially when you are sitting on the lounge and you move your foot, she has to just mozzie on over there and play with your foot until you start rubbing her belly . She is always the last one to get out of bed and would stay in bed all day snuggled up if you let her but then she just loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and when it rains and she comes inside she will come to me straight away to get her feet and body rubbed dry with an old towel. I have made the door on the chicken pen more secure now and I suppose I'll rub Abbey's belly for her tonight!
