As I'm getting older I have been thinking more about my health and ways to improve it. My journey started with sourdough bread and has lead me to Kombucha, Kefir and Fermented vegetables. I have learnt so much, I can't get enough of it and now I'm sharing my enthusiasm and my cultures with everyone who is willing to listen. One of my like minded friends share this ladies website with me and I would like to encourage anyone to check it out as well. As usual my life is so hectic at the moment that I am only here briefly, but I will be back.

The days are now getting cooler and shorter, and there is that possibility that I might have time to write up what has been going on. I thought I'd write up a list here now then come back and extend on a few of these things.

Our beloved Kitty died this year, old age

I had to put down my first goat on our farm, Mary.

Our first butchering on the farm.

More animal additions to the farm.

The house is progressing in leaps and bounds

I have been making Sour Dough Bread, Kombucha, and Kefir

I've had a successful summer growing season

Pickles, Jams, Vinegars, Flavoured Salts and Preserves

The Green House

Bartering my produce

It is the Easter long weekend here in Australia and it is now late and I've had friends, children and grandchildren here on and off for the last 2 weeks and I'm feeling so weary so I'm off to bed :)white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-22193451455926978362014-02-12T23:55:00.000+11:002014-02-12T23:55:43.408+11:00Too Hot in the Kitchen! The days have been long and hot and this heat just sucks the energy out of me. My garden has been producing really well and I'm dragging buckets of veggies into the kitchen to pickle, bottle, freeze, cook and just eat. There have been days where I've lacked that energy to even go out to pick my veggies and you know what a zucchini can do in a couple of days when it is over due to be picked, I've had to wheel the wheel barrow in to get my veg back to the house.

Well today I been in and out of the kitchen all day only because of the heat but today I have bottled sweet pickles, bottled pickled cucumbers, made a batch of kombucha ( my very first, so excited) cooked a huge pot of dog food, grated and froze kilos of zucchinis, prepared a loaf of sour dough and finished drying the chillies. It won't be long and I will be up to my elbows in tomatoes and making pasta sauces, drying and preserving tomatoes.

On a different note I have a farmer coming around in a day or so to but down one of my goats, she is fairly old but her legs seem to have given way and she is unable to stand now. I live about 50kms from my town and the cost for a vet to come out is like $200 ( just for travelling) so unfortunately my next best option is for a trained farmer to put her down.white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-10183663442458827142014-01-16T14:17:00.002+11:002014-01-16T14:20:46.070+11:00Bee Colony Collapse Disorder

This season I finally got my veggie patch up and running, not as big and plentiful as I'd hoped but at least it is a start. I noticed in spring that there wasn't many bees about, just an observation in my garden and I thought maybe because I don't have many flowering plants around, but I live in a rural setting and there are lot of native plants. Anyways, I've had this concern for bees and even thinking of getting a hive and for the last few months I've been reading about the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder and it has just dumb foundered me, we as a society are killing our bees with pesticides and whatever else we use. The bees are getting all sorts of viruses because their immune system were being suppressed in some way, there is no evidence of this as yet but if we, they, the scientist don't figure this out its going to wipe out our food supply.

I am no scientist or expert on what's going on in the world of bees but this is something that will affect everyone and I think we should all be thinking of the bees and stop using pesticides. More info check out these websites:-

I just love this life on the farm more and more each day. The morning starts with the milking of the goats and the tendering to all the animals eagerly awaiting for their breakfast, the smells and noises as breakfast is serve to all of them waiting is amazing, you definitely feel loved.

I seem to always be in the kitchen at the moment, which I just love, there is always bread to be made, morning and afternoon teas and lunch to be made for a very hard working and hungry husband. With funds a bit tight at the moment I make my own dog food, it's just basically pasta, veggies, garlic, stock and mince. They also get raw meat bones every now and then. Living in a rural area we have a lot of problems with feral pigs and kangaroos and farmers are allowed to cull a certain number on their farms which brings me to the point were I will be culling a few for my dogs. My kids bought me a oven smoker for Christmas and I'm thinking about smoking and drying roo (kangaroo) meat and bones which would be cheaper and healthier.

On another note my tomatoes still haven't ripened, I feel this has been the longest season ever but thankfully someone on my facebook call out has agreed to swap some cherry tomatoes for some fresh chook eggs, way to go. I've been hanging for the sweet juicy flavoursome taste of home grown tomatoes. I've just started to pick the cucumbers and it won't belong and I'll be making bread and butter pickles, so yummy. white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-59667978197663784082014-01-09T20:37:00.003+11:002014-01-09T20:38:00.623+11:00Its Raining!

It's been raining on and off today and the temperature has dropped giving us some relief. The paddocks have that dry yellow crispness about them and the dam levels are dropping not a good start to the year. I'm sending some sheep to the abattoir next week, enough for ourselves and the kids plus one for a friend which will cover the cost of freight/slaughter and butchering. I might even think about sending some to the sale yards, we don't have a real lot of stock but if the paddocks start to suffer it probably is for the best.

Wally my farmyard cat loves to hang out with me when I milk the goats. I often feel her rub against my leg when I'm milking. There is also a hen that lays eggs in there as well, its a real family affair kind of farm. I often wander around the farm checking fences and animals and I would look behind and I'd have a trail of animals following.

This is where I milk and that is my milking stanchion that my hubby made for me, I also keep the babies in here for the night. I have about five goats that I milk sometimes seven depends if the kids feed off them and I usually get between 5-6 litres of milk.

This is where the chickens hang out, we are in the process of making more pens so that we can breed meat birds and maybe gets some turkeys. The kid goats also have this area to hang out as well, you can never have enough fenced off areas for animals.

I'm off to bed early tonight as I've had a few sleepless nights with restless leg syndrome, it drives me insane. I'm looking into fermentation as I read probiotic drinks are good for your system and could possibly help me.white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-3355773598873584642014-01-06T22:11:00.002+11:002014-01-06T22:11:44.527+11:00Trying to be Frugal!

The zucchinis are producing well at the moment and I plan to freeze some and later add to the dog food I make, some to be used in fritters, soups, stews, cakes and hopefully I can make pickles and relishes. Whatever I grow I plan to make as many things possible so that I have a variety in my pantry and freezer,

I've been trying to stay away from foreign imports and to buy only home grown or organically grown foods. This was a bag of garlic I had sitting in my veggie box for a while now, it is from China, so I thought I'd use my dehydrator and make a garlic powder. I used to think more of price than product but I'm becoming more concerned with the state of our food that I'm thinking I am investing in my health when I buy organic wholesome foods.

This is what I harvested today from my garden for dinner and I thought I'd dry some fennel as well. Another job I managed to do today was go through my recipes that are written down on pieces of scrap paper, envelopes and cut outs from magazines and combine then with other hand written recipes into one book. I should post a picture of my current folder that I have that is overflowing with these recipes it is a bit of a sight. Anyway I'm trying to get some order in there, I love cooking and I have a lot of fantastic recipes but I also have a pile that look good but I haven't made so I thought I'd go through one by one and try them out.white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-62200095777025434642014-01-05T22:31:00.002+11:002014-01-05T22:31:26.909+11:00I Forgot and I Remembered !

I've found that I have more time to do a lot more now and one of those things is making sour dough bread. Facebook has opened lots of opportunities for me and I have made lots of new friends in my area and one of them offered to show a group of us how to make sour dough bread and gave us some starter to start off with. The taste is amazing and the process is really easy and works in well when ever I want to make a loaf, plus have you seen the price of sour dough bread its something like $5. My other quest to make fermented drinks, but I need to do some more research into that.

I love spending my time doing these simple things and what's even better is I can pass these things onto my girls and get them involved in being self sufficient and tasting the difference between home grown and made to processed shop bought items. They have children as well and they are wanting to provide the best for them so they are choosing the healthier options.
This is my bean teepee made from tree branches. My first planting of beans was a disaster, I think the seeds were eaten before they could get out of the ground. Some did surfaced but were either killed off by the frost or were eaten just as they were about to take off. There is just over 7 weeks of summer left maybe the growing season will be a bit longer with this hot weather at the moment, lets hope so.
It is good to be back online, life on the farm has been busy. With the weather warming up shearing has been my top priority but with only about 25 sheep to shear it has been difficult getting a shearer out here. It was actually facebook that helped me get in contact with a shearer that was able to come and shear my sheep, so after a full on day with shearing, drenching and marking lambs it was satisfying to have this job over and done with.

We are only a hobby farm but it still takes time to tend to everyone on the farm, todate I have 24 sheep, 23 lambs, 1 ram, 14 dairy and bore goats, 15 kids, 9 chickens, 2 cats, 4 dogs, 3 guinea pigs and I think that's about it.

With not working anymore I am now a full time farmer and my aim is to make this little farm to be as self sufficient as possible so the wool from the sheep will be taken to a wool buyer in town and this will pay for the shearing. I only have cross bred sheep so the wool is not of a high quality but it still brings in an income.

My goats are also bringing in an income, I sell my goats milk to people who are bottle feeding puppies, lambs or one lady I sell to she has miniature donkeys, they say goats milk is the best for humans and animals. I also sell off my baby boys, the wethers, as I have no need for them, my girls I plan to keep until they are old enough to be put into kid and be able to be milked, then I will sell them off as dairy goats. This is the plan at the moment so I'm hoping this will turn into a viable business.

I'm determined to get my vegetable patch up and running this year, after our house burnt down a lot of things have been neglected and the veggie patch has been one of them. We just had 70mm of rain and the ground is just right to turn it over and remove the thick grass and roots from the ground. My lovely hubby has erected a fence and gate for me to keep the dogs and goats out.

The rain has made my work a lot easier pulling these grass roots out. My leeks are still going strong, I usually cut my leeks just below the ground so that they will reproduce next season.

These are my raised beds, I still have a lot of work ahead of me to get them ready for planting. My hubby said he'll make a couple of trellises for my beans and other vines. I'm going to try and grow everything possible because I'm wanting to have enough to feed ourselves, children and grandchildren as well as bottling, preserving and maybe sell, barter and give to others in need. We have been having beautiful springs days and they have been getting longer, daylight savings is just around the corner.

The paddocks are alive with babies, at the moment all my goats have kidded except one which gives me 16 kids. The sheep have done pretty well also but I will have to wait till I get them all in for shearing before I can do a tally.

I was so excited when this little black beauty was born, the father was a British Alpine. With having all white Saanens it was a nice change.

We just had 70mm of rain after nearly 30 dry days it was a breath of fresh air and the paddocks are starting to show the green. I had to start thinking seriously about my herd of goats, I've decided to give away two of my wethers which I have had from the beginning but I know they are going to a good home. At present I have 17 goats and 14 kids plus that sheep below which has been with the angoras since it was a week old.

I have sold one of the angoras and started advertising the little wethers. I am now milking six goats and the milk I pasteurize and feed to the babies so life is a little hectic. With having so many goats one of the problems we are having is a few of them are jumping fences and getting out, you'd think with 88 acres to roam they would be happy but no apparently the grass outside the front gate is the best. So now we are setting up electric fencing.
Well its that time of year again, another year wiser but oh boy do I feel pampered. My darling children gave me a day of pampering which included eyelash tints, eyebrow wax & tinted, massaged, facial, pedicure, manicure and a cut & colour it was sure a day to remember.

I love these frosty early mornings when I get up to feed the animals they all give me their own little personal greeting noises. Our little hobby farm has grown, to date we have 37 sheep, 2 horses, 16 goats, 4 cows,2 rosters, 6 chickens, 2 cats and 4 dogs and with spring around the corner we are going to have baby fever.

Last season wasn't very productive in the veggie patch well it really hasn't been since the house burnt down but with the family rapidly growing and with friends and family coming up to stay for days on end I need it to be booming.

Hubby cut up the old water tanks from the house for me and I've filled them with compost, manures and mulch from the paddocks. If you look to the far left in the picture that metal frame is going to be my green house, I'm thinking big here now I want this garden to give me the variety, quantity, quality and more. I'm not very experienced at gardening so I'm searching the net and reading up as much as I can to make this happen.
Another day of rain and cold winds but we all achieved something during the day, I fed and check all the livestock and pulled down the wire on the old chicken pen so the little goats had another place to shelter in out of the rain. My son in-law to be went and did some fencing for me, I have sheep that have been getting out and into my neighbours property as well as feral pigs coming through so that fence needed fixing. The feral pigs have been making a mess in my paddocks and they have been getting closer and closer to the house. I've chatted with my neighbour a few times about the pigs as they have been on his property as well, he said he we will put out a large trap with some sweet corn and try and catch some.

My daughter was in a cooking mood and made bread and cooked corned beef for dinner. My hubby spent most of the day in bed as he has been sick but spent a few hours sanding back gyprock in the new lounge room him and son in-law have been building.

For mothers day my hubby and family gave me some great books, today I was reading "The good life" by Sarah O'Neil if you haven't heard of it, google it, it is a great read. I've taken in some great ideas and inspiration one being a herb tea garden I don't know about you but I could taste those fragrant teas in my mouth already. I'll have to take photos of my raised beds tomorrow for my blog but I think I'll make one of those beds just for the tea pot.

At long last we've had a day of rainfall and we could see some more tomorrow. As I was feeding the animals this morning I notice my young filly wasn't coming upto the yard, something was holding her back, as I looked down to her legs I notice some wire was wrapped around her back leg preventing her from walking forward. I had to get my hubby out of bed because this was going to be a two man event. Bella is young and unfortunately hasn't had a lot of handling with her back legs but I was so surprised she was fairly calm. I held her and my hubby (at the other end)cut the wire off her leg, what a way to start the morning off.

Before the rain set in I was able to attend to some of my vegetable beds, I've been bagging up the manures from my paddocks in preparation of my beds for spring. It's funny how the small things can make you so happy I looking at these bags of manure as it was gold :) I also had time to plant up some herbs and veggies.

As the rain started to get heavier I decided to head in for lunch, I think hot soup was called for such a cold wet day. I love setting up my laptop in the kitchen and look for recipes on the web for the ingredients I'm wanting to use, today it was going to be leek and tomato soup, yummy!

Happy Mothers Day to all you mums out there I hope you were treated as special as you all are. Its not easy being a mum, I think we make lots of sacrifices and give more than we receive but I think we wouldn't change it any other way. Below is my favourite recipe for Cinnamon Rolls, I made these as a special treat for myself and my daughter as well as every other person here today. This recipe is really easy and taste soooooo good but be careful not to over indulge.

Meet Dozer the new addition to our animal family, he is about 10 weeks old now and growing inches every day. Dozer was the only surviving pup in a litter of nine, he is a pure Boarder Collie. He has been by my side everyday even when I have to go to town, I'm hoping he will be a good working dog and help me on the farm.

I've had a career change, I no longer work in retail but at home as a farmer. Since paying off our mortgage life has taken a different direction. I have more time to enjoy life and do the things I have always wanted to do. I enjoy the life style and being self sufficient has always been my dream and hopefully eventually our farm will offer farm stays for those who are like minded. I currently have 36 sheep some in lamb, 11 goats, 3 of them I am currently milking and hopefully 6 of them are in kid, as well as 5 young goats about 8mths old, three Dexter cows that are hopefully in calf and one calf as well as chickens and then the usual 2 cats and 4 dogs.

Life for me is still busy but a different kind of busy, I have my daughter, her partner and two grandchildren living with us in the cottage while we are still building our new house. Milking goats and making cheese and eventually making goats soap is a nice kind of busy for me, these are the things that I really enjoy and hopefully down the track make money for me so that I can continue to improve the farm.
The start of every year you like to start fresh and organized but you loose your memento, well this year I need to be organized so it is going to be my mission. There will be five of us and one more on the way in April. With living in each others pockets we will have to have house rules, weekly menus, schedules, rosters and so much more. My mission is huge the only thing that might put a spanner in the works is that I'm starting menopause! but I am a very patient person, considerate, kind, compassionate, forgiving, understanding, a good listener and I always forgive so it should be fine, fingers cross.

This was the bathroom which had a shower, toilet and laundry tub and was attached to the kitchen. When our house burnt down we were given three demountable which we joined together live in and the kitchen one was also the bathroom. We added two bedrooms, a new bathroom and a hall way plus laundry. So we are now pulling out the old bathroom to make the kitchen larger.

For my starting fresh for the year I finally redeemed my gift voucher I received for my birthday at Bella Spa. I had a remedial massage, deep sea mineral facial, a deluxe pedicure and my eyebrows wax and tinted, talk about being 50 and fabulous, bring on 2013 :)
Good bye 2012 and Hello 2013, these are some pictures of the last 12 to 18mths of my life. Today we decided to rearrange the kitchen in our little cottage to make more bench space and food storage, with one of my daughters coming back home along with her partner and my grandson life is going to be very cosy until we finish building our new house. Did I mention both of my daughters are expecting, one in February and the other in April, this will make me grandma to six beautiful grandchildren. I will post pics of our small kitchen renovation tomorrow.white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-6483659549847688522012-11-11T21:48:00.001+11:002012-11-11T21:51:56.605+11:00Back to BloggingTime Flies When You Are Having FUN!!
I have been away from my blog for quiet a while, life has been so busy, but life brings changes and now I am back. Life is still busy but a different kind of busy which I love and hopefully I can share this busy fun life on my blog. Life has taken a turn and without the pressures of having a mortgage to pay I can pursuing my dream of sustainability. white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-7712207364196587432011-10-04T13:40:00.000+11:002011-10-04T13:40:59.876+11:00What is your weekly menu like?I wasn't going to rave on how busy my life is but I just can't help it!
Just how much can you fit into one day?
If we didn't need sleep the days would roll over each other.
My daughter, partner and grandson will be moving back home with us at the end of October as the granny flat they have been living in since our house burnt down is needed for our friends daughter. So we ( my hubby, and good friends) have been frantically adding two bedrooms, a bathroom, hall and verandah to our little demountable we have been living in since May.

Hubby has also been doing the last few things, such as tiling bathrooms, decking, bathroom fit-out, plumbing etc on the Church which is getting close to completion. As well as making furniture for our customers and finishing off one of our neighbour's extension, he is in need of a holiday. As a requirement for lodgement of our plans to council I as an owner builder have to complete an Owner Builders Course online, so much fun, I have about 60 hours of reading :)

I had a great long weekend, one day it rained but the other two I managed to pant strawberries in hanging baskets on our deck, prepare seven beds for vegetables, plant celery, beetroot, spinach, Chinese vegs, tomatoes, capsicum and carrots. My seedling in my plastic glass house are coming along nicely, I think I have done well considering my veggie patch is surround by a construction site with mounds of dirt and old water tanks. Ok that's enough whinging for today :)

What I wanted to mention today was what I heard on the radio the other day, a lot of people these day only have 3-5 recipes or meals they used in their weekly menu. Imagine eating the same few things every few days. I suppose there is a number of reasons why people do this, lack of cooking abilities, maybe they werh never taught how to cook or learnt a variety of recipes, lack of imagination, laziness or maybe with the vast options of take away meals these days people prefer the quick and easy option. I thought about my meal options and I was pretty impressed with myself, I think I could go for months with not cooking the same thing twice. How about you? Do you cook a variety of meals or do you rotate the same meals every week? Do you teach your children how to cook? Have you passed recipes down to your children? Do you have recipes that have been in your family a long time? I would love to hear your point of view :)

Very early Thursday morning we were awoken by a cry outside our window, which at present is near the sheep yards and at first we thought one of the cats had caught a rabbit but after a while I went outside with the torch to investigate. I saw our precious scooby dragging himself on the ground crying in pain, my heart just sanked, I knew he was in bad trouble and I couldn't do anything for him. He had either been bitten by a snake (this was about 3.30am so not sure if snake would be out) or he had eaten fox bait so I knew he was in trouble. I picked him up in a blanket and carried him to one of our sheds out of the cold and patted him for awhile then I left him. In the morning I knew he would be gone. We have been excavating the site for our house and we had to move a camellia tree that was near the old front verandah and we thought we would transplant it and bury scooby underneath it. I posted about Scooby a few years ago when he wandered off the street into my shop as a kitten in town, he was such a beautiful big cat.
FAREWELL SCOOBY :(white_lillyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09706330207967150054noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6295976474666315933.post-22653079859883156692011-08-30T16:43:00.001+10:002011-08-30T16:46:31.558+10:00It is ready to start

The house has now been demolished and what building material that could be saved will be used in other building projects on the farm such as accommodation for my milking goats and storage sheds as well as an extension on our demountable. We will be making the demountable into guest/tourist accommodation later when the house is finished. My son is coming up in a few days bringing two excavating machines as well as his boss to excavate part of the house site. This house is going to be a lot bigger than the old one and we will be having verandahs right around the house, which I can't wait to sit out on a warm summers night or in the sun on a cold morning.

We have a new dog to our herd, my son unfortunately does not have a large enough back yard for this girl so she is staying with us a for a while. I will have to show you a photo of her, she is as dalmation cross and she is very large. I have to keep the little dogs a way from her, being a pup she is too boisterous when she plays.

We have been busy doing fences, looking after lambs, making furniture for our shop, looking after children and gran children, and getting ready to start to build this house, I will show photos of its stages of build later. I'm also hoping to get my veggie patch booming this year as I am wanting to have enough to feed ourselves as well as our kids and grand kids, the price of food these days especially meat is crazy. I'm waiting for my one of my neighbours to finish shearing his sheep to come and shear mine and pick up a couple of older lambs to kill for our freezer. I know some of you might not like the sound of that but when you can produce and look after your own sheep with care and know that they are not full of chemicals and you can appreciate the quality and taste you know you and your family are getting the best.
